Wood vs Metal Pilates Reformer: Which One Should You Buy?
Wood or metal is one of the first decisions every reformer buyer hits, and most advice online comes from people selling only one of the two. We manufacture both, so here is the honest version of the comparison.
The short answer
Choose a wood reformer if the machine will live permanently on a studio floor or in a dedicated home space. Choose the foldable metal reformer if your space does double duty and the machine needs to stand up and roll away between sessions. Build quality is not the deciding factor here, because both are commercial-grade and carry the same 10-year main-frame warranty. The deciding factor is your floor.
Frame and construction
Our wood models are built from first-class beechwood with chrome-plated and stainless steel components. Beechwood is dense, stable hardwood, the same class of material the classical reformer was originally built around. The Foldable Metal Reformer swaps the wood body for a chrome-plated steel chassis with a central locking system, engineered around one job: folding upright in seconds without losing rigidity when open.
Stability and feel
Weight is a feature in a reformer. The wood machines weigh around 205 lbs, and that mass is what makes the carriage feel planted during heavy spring work and jumps. The foldable runs lighter at about 120 lbs, still stable under commercial use, with a slightly different feel that home users rarely notice and studios running back-to-back jumpboard classes sometimes do.
Space and storage
This is where the two split completely. A wood reformer needs its footprint full time, roughly 93 inches by 28 inches. The foldable closes to about 51 inches tall by 13 inches deep and rolls on built-in wheels, so a living room, garage gym or multi-use studio room gets its floor back between sessions. If your space cannot give up 20 square feet permanently, the decision is already made.
Durability and warranty
Both frames carry the same 10-year warranty on the main frame against manufacturing defects, and spare parts stay available for every model we sell. Springs, ropes and upholstery are wear items on any reformer, wood or metal, and they are replaceable on both. There is no durability penalty for choosing the foldable; the trade is feel and mass, not lifespan.

Which one for a studio?
Studios equipping a permanent floor almost always choose wood, usually the wood reformer line with towers on some or all beds for programming range. The foldable earns its place in studios that run mixed-format rooms, mat classes in the morning and reformer sessions in the afternoon on the same floor. For orders of 3 or more machines we price the whole build-out with address-specific volume pricing through the studio quote form.
Which one for home?
If you have a dedicated spot, the wood machine gives you the full studio feel at home and never needs moving.
